Touch-UI for a clinical optical device
The touch display of the Zeiss VisuRef, an automated refraction system for opticians and optometrists. Existing wireframe concepts, translated screen by screen into ZUI, the Zeiss User Interface design system.

Where the concept and the system disagreed
The flows existed as wireframe concepts, and many of them didn’t map cleanly onto ZUI. Each of those gaps left room for interpretation. The work was turning concept and design system into consistent, usable screens.

Build the system alongside the screens
Where concept and system disagreed, each open point was prototyped and decided together with product management and design leadership. I conceived a few new icons. The ZUI icon team drew and implemented them in several sizes. Touch targets had fixed minimum sizes. What ZUI didn’t cover yet went into the system, not around it.

Screens that hold up in both modes
ZUI runs in a dark and a light mode, and every screen was built to work in both. The system the screens are built on received the German Design Award 2022 in the category Excellent Product Design, Human-Machine Interface.
- Screens translated from wireframe into ZUI
- New medical-device components and states, fed back into ZUI
- Interactive prototypes for the implementation team
